Buttercream Calculator
Running out of frosting halfway through is the worst. Estimate how much buttercream to fill and cover your cake before you start mixing.
Rough guide (two layers, filled & frosted)
| Cake | Buttercream |
|---|---|
| 6" round | ~2ΒΌ cups (500 g) |
| 8" round | ~4 cups (900 g) |
| 9" round | ~5 cups (1130 g) |
| 10" round | ~6ΒΌ cups (1400 g) |
| 9Γ13 sheet | ~5 cups (1130 g) |
These are estimates for American-style buttercream (about 226 g per cup). Whipped or meringue buttercreams are lighter per cup, and generous decorators always want extra β it's better to have a little too much than too little.
How it works
Frosting scales with the cake's surface area (for the outside coat) and the number of fillings between layers. The calculator anchors to a two-layer 8-inch round needing about 4 cups, then scales by your cake's area, adds ~1.4 cups per extra filling layer, and adjusts for how much coverage you want.
FAQ
How much butter is that?
American buttercream is roughly half butter by weight, so ~900 g of frosting uses about 450 g (1 lb, or 4 sticks) of butter plus icing sugar.
What about cupcakes?
A generous swirl uses about ΒΌ cup each, so a batch of 12 needs roughly 3 cups β similar to a small cake.
Should I make extra?
Yes. Always mix a little more than the estimate β you can't easily match a colour or texture mid-decorate, and leftovers freeze well.
